Waga kado no itai no shimizu fuyu fukaki kage koso miene kōri surashi mo

English Translation
At my gate the water
of the plank-lined well,
in deepest winter,
shows no reflection now—
it must have turned to ice.
Meaning
The clear water of the plank-lined well by my gate shows no reflection now in deep winter—it must have frozen over.
Commentary
Winter Poems 338

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "A winter night"
Seeing that the clear water of the plank-lined well by his gate no longer shows a reflection as winter deepens, the poet surmises that it must be frozen. He moves the design of the mountain spring two poems back to the familiar well at his own gate.
The Ruijū and Teika texts give line 3 as fuyu fukami. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a circle.

Line 1 means "at my gate," moving from the mountain spring to a well close at hand.
Line 2 is the clear water of a well lined with planks.
Line 3 means "as winter deepens," the same words as the opening of 336.
Line 4 is the same as line 4 of 336, and the missing reflection becomes the evidence for inferring that the water is frozen.
Line 5: rashi is a conjecture based on evidence and mo is exclamatory, "it must have frozen."
