Winter Poems 345
Headnote: "Winter moon by the sea"
This poem was composed on the theme of the winter moon by the sea. On a rocky shore beneath the clear moon, the wind in the pines blows cold, and the beach lit by moonlight looks white as snow. Likening the moonlight to snow, the poet portrays a cold, clear winter seashore.
The Ruijū text places this poem in the miscellaneous section and gives line 4 as shiroku zo miyuru. Kamo no Mabuchi commented that the phrase "the white beach of snow" in line 5 is in a later style.
Line 1 means "where the moon is clear."
Line 2 is the wind blowing through the pines on the rocky shore; after the preceding poem, the moon and the wind in the pines are paired again.
Line 3 means "blowing cold and keen." Line 3 of the next poem and of 347 is the same.
Line 4 means "looks white," describing the beach in the moonlight.
Line 5 ends on a noun, likening the beach white in the moonlight to snow.
