Tachinoboru keburi wa nao zo tsure mo naki yuki no ashita no shiogama no ura

English Translation
Rising ever up,
the smoke goes on unheeding
as it always does,
on this morning of the snow
in the bay of Shiogama.
Meaning
The rising smoke of the salt fires goes on as ever, heedless of all—on this snowy morning at the bay of Shiogama.
Commentary
Winter Poems 381

Headnote: "Snow by the sea"
This poem was composed on the theme of snow by the sea. On the snowy morning at the bay of Shiogama, though all around lies under snow, the smoke of the salt fires rises heedless as ever. The poet portrays smoke that rises unchanged amid a world of white.
Kamo no Mabuchi commented that the phrase "of the snowy morning" in line 4 is in a later style.

Line 1 describes the smoke rising up.
Line 2: nao means "still, as ever," and zo is a binding particle concluded in line 3.
Line 3 concludes zo with the attributive form, and the poem pauses here; it says the smoke is unmoved by the snow.
Line 4 means "of the snowy morning," the phrase Mabuchi called later in style.
Line 5 ends on a noun, naming last the poetic place in Mutsu known for the smoke of its salt fires.
