Where the white snow falls
on the mountain of Furu
the cedars cluster—
so soon, so soon to pass away,
the closing of the year!

Winter Poems 400
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "The year's end"
Using the cedar groves of Mount Furu, where white snow falls, as a lead, the poet sings of a year's end that passes in no time. From sugi, "cedar," he draws out suguru, "to pass," laying the swiftness of the year's end over a scene of snowy mountains.
Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a circle.
Line 1 means "where white snow falls," leading to furu in line 2.
Line 2: furu is a pivot word meaning both snow "falling" and the place Furu in Yamato.
Line 3 is a grove of cedars, and the lines up to here form a preface leading to suguru, which shares its sound.
Line 4 means "with hardly a moment until it passes."
Line 5 is the same as that of the preceding poem.
