Love Poems 409
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
The poet laments that his beloved will not know he bears a longing thicker than the dew on the summer grasses. The deep grasses where a stag lies hidden, and the dew upon them, serve as a figure for the abundance of his longing.
Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a circle.
Line 1, ojika fusu, means "where the stag lies down," suggesting dense summer growth.
Line 2 means "of the grasses of the summer fields," continuing the summer imagery after the cuckoo of the preceding poem.
Line 3 means "even more than the dew," taking the abundance of dew as the measure.
Line 4: ji is negative conjecture and na an exclamatory particle, "she will not know"; the order is inverted here, and shigeki serves both the dew and the longing.
Line 5 means "that I have such longing," returning by inversion to "she will not know" in line 4.
