Longing for you,
I languish, and like the dew
on the low reeds

I am ready to vanish.

Love Poems 420
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
The poet likens himself, wilting with longing, to the dew on the tips of low reeds bending in the autumn wind, ready to vanish at any moment. The poem has the plain tone of its Man'yōshū diction.
This poem was included in the Fūga Wakashū. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a circle.
Line 1 means "longing for you."
Line 2 means "as I languish," urabure being a word found in the Man'yōshū.
Line 3 means "in the autumn wind," adding autumn's loneliness; the scene moves from the river of the preceding poem to the autumn fields.
Line 4 means "of the low reeds that bend."
Line 5: zo binds the attributive beki, "the dew must vanish," overlaid with the poet's own life about to fade.
