Love Poems 442
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
Like duckweed drifting in a cove where reed ducks clamor, the poet wonders whether he will go on brooding on love amid sorrow, with nowhere to settle.
Line 1 means "of the ducks among the reeds."
Line 2 means "of the cove where they clamor," suggesting a troubled heart.
Line 3 means "like the floating weed," and the first three lines form a preface leading to uki.
Line 4 plays on ukite, "floating" and "sorrowful"; ya binds the attributive mu in line 5.
Line 5 means "shall I go on brooding?" Against the evergreen pine of the preceding poem, rootless duckweed shows an unsettled heart.
