Roma-ji

Kamome iru ariso no susaki shio michite kakuroi yukeba masaru waga koi

English Translation
Where the seagulls rest
on the sandspit of the rocky shore,
the tide comes in;
as it slips from sight,
the more my love increases.
Meaning
As the tide rises over the sandspit of the rocky shore where the seagulls rest and it slips out of sight, so my love grows ever greater.
Commentary
Love Poems 444

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Among poems on love"
As the sandspit on the rocky shore where gulls rest disappears beneath the rising tide, so as the beloved recedes from sight the poet's longing grows. The rising tide is laid over a swelling love.
According to the notes in the base text, the Teika text differs in line 2. Here the base text is followed.

Line 1 means "where the seagulls rest," continuing shore birds after the cormorants of the preceding poem.
Line 2 names the sandspit of the rough rocky shore.
Line 3 means "the tide rising," overlaying the rising tide with growing love.
Line 4 means "as it goes into hiding," the sandspit covered by the tide and the beloved passing from sight.
Line 5 means "my love that grows," ending on a noun.
