Love Poems 459
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
As the fishing fires lit by fisherfolk on the bay of Suma are seen faintly from afar, the poet wishes for some way to see his beloved, if only faintly.
According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū text also repeats this poem in the section of poems found in another manuscript and in printed editions, probably an editor's error.
Line 1 means "on the bay of Suma," a poetic place in Settsu, with an extra syllable.
Line 2 means "which the fisherfolk have lit."
Line 3 means "like the fishing fires," and the first three lines form a preface leading to "faintly."
Line 4 means "faintly, the one I love," the same conceit as "even faintly" in 436.
Line 5 is the same last line as 436; there it was salt-making fires, here fishing fires.
