Love Poems 462
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
As the water flowing at the foot of Kamiyama in Yamashiro seethes and churns, so feeling overflows in the poet's breast, yet he broods without speaking and grieves for himself. Against the shallow river of the preceding poem, the seething water shows the force of feeling.
Line 1 names Kamiyama, the sacred mountain of the Upper Kamo Shrine in Yamashiro.
Line 2 means "of the water at the mountain's foot."
Line 3 means "seething up," the same word as line 3 of 447.
Line 4 means "brooding without speaking," de being negative.
Line 5: zo binds the attributive kanashiki; it is the same last line as 443.
