Love Poems 465
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
As the leaves of the crinum lilies on the bay of Kumano overlap layer upon layer, the poet wishes his beloved would know how many his longings are, even unspoken. Like the preceding poem it places iwazu to mo in line 3.
Line 1 means "of Kumano" in Kii, mi being an honorific prefix.
Line 2 names the crinum lilies of the bay, whose overlapping leaves suggest layered longings.
Line 3 means "though I do not speak," the same as line 3 of the preceding poem.
Line 4 means "of the heart that longs."
Line 5: namu is a wish directed at another, "I wish you would know the number," overlaying the layered leaves and the many longings.
