Love Poems 469
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
As the smoke of the fisherfolk burning salt all night at Ashinoya smolders on, so the poet smolders in grief all night; he lays himself over the salt-burner.
Line 1 names Ashinoya, a poetic place in Settsu.
Line 2 names the salt-burner of the shore.
Line 3: ya is interrogative, "is it that I am?"; the poem pauses here.
Line 4 means "all through the night."
Line 5 means "do I smolder in grief," the same kuyuri wabu as line 5 of 435; after the snow of the preceding poem, the scene returns to smoke and fire.
