to anyone, how painful;
like Takekuma's pine,
I'll wait no more, for waiting,
there is nothing to be done.

Love Poems 473
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
Pained by loving in secret, the poet resolves to stop waiting, like the pine of Takekuma in Michinoku whose name means "wait," for waiting does no good. The repeated sounds matsu, mata, mate give the poem its rhythm.
According to the notes in the base text, the original manuscript is thought to be in error in line 5.
Line 1 means "unknown to others."
Line 2 means "it is painful to love," and the poem pauses here.
Line 3 names Takekuma, a poetic place in Michinoku known for its twin pines.
Line 4 means "I will not wait like the pine," matsu meaning both pine and wait; ji expresses negative intention.
Line 5 means "waiting is no use," repeating the same verb after matsu and mata in line 4.
