Love Poems 479
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
Even if they go on not meeting, if he lives on and some night they meet, what would there be to resent? The poet holds to a faint hope, and the repeated sound ari gives the poem its rhythm.
The base text glosses "bay" in line 2 with "sea," and the Ruijū and Teika texts read line 2 as ariso no umi no. According to the notes in the base text, the original manuscript reads arazu in line 4, but this was corrected by the gloss and the Ruijū text, and that correction is followed here.
Line 1 means "only like this."
Line 2 names the bay of Ariso, a poetic place in Etchū, echoing ari, "to be."
Line 3 means "while I live on," repeating the ari of line 2.
Line 4 means "if there is a night we meet"; against the joy of meeting in the preceding poem, a meeting is still awaited here.
Line 5: ka is rhetorical, "why should I resent? not at all."
