Love Poems 490
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of love at famous places"
Because of his beloved, and not of his own will, the poet laments that like the fisherfolk dripping brine over seaweed at Suma he may have passed the years wet with tears. It draws on Ariwara no Yukihira's poem asking that, if anyone should inquire, they be told he grieves at Suma dripping brine.
According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū and Teika texts differ in line 5. Here the base text is followed.
Line 1 means "because of you."
Line 2 means "not of my own accord."
Line 3 means "on the bay of Suma," with an extra syllable, the place where Ariwara no Yukihira lamented his exile.
Line 4 means "dripping brine for salt," overlaid with shedding tears; like "burning seaweed for salt" in 436, it uses salt-making for love.
Line 5 is the same last line as the preceding poem.
