The moon is in the sky

Love Poems 494
Headnote: "Hidden love, on the moon"
The moon hangs in the sky of the nights he once knew, yet the familiar face of the past is gone, and the poet longs for it. It draws on Ariwara no Narihira's poem asking whether the moon and spring are not those of old, while he alone remains as he was. From here follow love poems on set topics.
The Ruijū text titles it "Hidden love, likened to the moon."
Line 1 means "is it not the spring?" ya being interrogative; drawing on the source poem, the poem pauses here.
Line 2 means "the moon of the nights I saw," yo meaning both world and night.
Line 3 means "though the sky is the same," adversative.
Line 4 means "of the familiar past."
Line 5: zo binds the attributive koishiki; kage is both moonlight and a remembered face. The sequence moves from famous places to set topics on the moon.
