Love Poems 515
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of waiting for a lover"
Even if people come to cut the grass on the moor of Mano in Michinoku, the one the poet waits for never comes even briefly, and the waiting is painful. It takes up "the one who does not come" from the preceding poem.
According to the notes in the base text, the Ruijū text titles it "On love in summer," and the Teika text differs in line 5. Here the base text is followed.
Line 1 means "of Michinoku."
Line 2 names the thatching grass on the moor of Mano, which leads to kari, "cutting."
Line 3 plays on kari, "to cut" and "for a moment": not even for a moment.
Line 4 means "only for one who does not come," the same words as line 1 of the preceding poem.
Line 5 means "the waiting is painful," ending on the attributive form with exclamation.
