Love Poems 521
Headnote: "Love, on the moon"
A person of no account, the poet can only gaze from afar like a drifting cloud, yet he feels deep tenderness for the autumn moon. The moon stands for a beloved of a station far above his own.
Line 1 means "of no account," a self-deprecating phrase.
Line 2 plays on uki, "floating" and "sorrowful": my sorrowful self, like a drifting cloud.
Line 3 means "though far away."
Line 4: zo binds the attributive omou, "I feel deeply moved."
Line 5 ends on a noun, the moon standing for a beloved gazed at from afar; against the moon on the sleeve in the preceding poem, it sings of the moon far in the sky.
