Shinobi amari koishiki toki wa ama no hara sora tobu kari no ne ni nakinubeshi

English Translation
When, past all bearing,
I am filled with longing,
across heaven's plain,
like the wild geese flying,
I surely will cry aloud.
Meaning
When my longing grows past all bearing, I feel I will cry aloud like the wild geese flying across the wide sky.
Commentary
Love Poems 537

Headnote: "Love, on wild geese"
When his longing grows past bearing, the poet feels he will cry aloud like the wild geese calling as they cross the sky.
The base text glosses line 5 with zo nakitsuru. Here the base text is followed. Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a circle.

Line 1 means "unable to bear it," with an extra syllable.
Line 2 means "when I am longing."
Line 3 means "the plain of heaven," the same words as line 1 of 431.
Line 4 means "like the geese flying across the sky."
Line 5 means "I shall surely cry aloud," overlaying the geese's cry with weeping; from Tanabata the imagery moves to autumn geese.
