At Mishima Inlet,
the wild rice of Tamae
hidden in the water,
unseen by any eye—
no one comes to reap it.

Love Poems 545
Headnote: "Love by the water"
As the wild rice of Tamae at Mishima Inlet lies hidden in the water so that no one cuts it, the poet's love is hidden, and no one comes to him.
Line 1 means "O Mishima Inlet," a poetic place in Settsu, ya exclamatory.
Line 2 names the wild rice of Tamae.
Line 3 means "hidden in the water," overlaid with hidden love.
Line 4 means "since it is not seen," the same as line 4 of 524.
Line 5 plays on karu, "to reap" and "to part from": no one comes.
