In the old village,
the cedar-shingled house
has gaps so wide,
never coming together,
have the years gone by?

Love Poems 548
Headnote: "Love at the old home"
As the boards of a cedar-roofed house in the old village gape and do not meet, the poet has never met his beloved, and the years have gone by. From here follow poems on love at the old home.
Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a circle.
Line 1 means "of the old village," a place where a lover's visits have ceased.
Line 2 means "of the house roofed with cedar boards."
Line 3 means "since the gaps are wide," o ... mi expressing cause; with an extra syllable, the ill-fitting boards lead to "not meeting."
Line 4 means "only without meeting," taking up the last line of 543.
Line 5 means "the years must have passed," the same last line as 491.
