How it has fallen
to ruin! The house you promised

by the dew-drenched eaves
the pine-crickets cry, waiting.

Love Poems 552
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Love at the old home"
The house where the beloved once promised to visit has fallen to ruin and become a field of grass, and by its dew-wet eaves the pine cricket, whose name means waiting, cries.
Kamo no Mabuchi judged the linking in tsuyu no nokiba ni in line 4 to be in the later style.
Line 1 means "it has fallen to ruin," keri exclamatory; the poem pauses here.
Line 2 means "the house that raised my hopes," where a visit was once promised.
Line 3 means "a field of grass," taking up "the house in ruins" from the preceding poem.
Line 4 means "by the dew-wet eaves."
Line 5 plays on matsu, the pine cricket and waiting, ending in the attributive form with exclamation.
