the dew lies cold, and when

not a night goes by that the pine-crickets
do not cry their waiting cry.

Love Poems 558
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "To someone who had led me to expect a visit"
When autumn comes and the dew on the bamboo-grass moor turns cold, not a night passes without the pine cricket crying, nor without the poet weeping as he waits. Taking up the evening of waiting from the preceding poem, it entrusts waiting to the pine cricket.
Line 1 names a moor of low bamboo grass, the same word as line 3 of 500.
Line 2 means "since the settling dew is cold," mi expressing cause.
Line 3 means "when autumn comes."
Line 4 plays on matsu, the pine cricket and waiting: "with the pine cricket's cry."
Line 5 means "there is no night it does not cry," overlaying the insect's cry with the poet's weeping; zo binds the attributive naki.
