Headnote: "Moon at a lodging on a journey"
Sleeping alone on a pillow of grass, the poet sees the moonlight of an unknown moor reflected in the dew on his pillow. The unease of a traveller gazing at a strange land's moon and the beauty of the moon in the dew are drawn together. Kamo no Mabuchi marked this poem with a sign of praise.
The Ruijū text places it in its travel section.
Line 1 means "lying alone," sharing its first two lines with the preceding poem; that poem tied the pillow's dew to the deer's voice, this one to the moonlight.
Line 2 means "of the pillow of grass."
Line 3 means "upon the dew," the same conceit as the moonlight lodging on the pillow in 566 of this book.
Line 4 means "of an unknown moor," conveying the traveller's unease.
Line 5 means "I see the moon," kana exclamatory.
