Headnote: "Winter shower at a lodging on a journey"
Staying in a poor, unfamiliar hut on the road, the poet finds the winter shower leaking onto his bed at night, and loneliness sinks into him. The unease of travel is drawn through the concrete discomfort of a leaking roof.
The Ruijū text places it in its travel section. The text transmitted by Teika reads line 3 as yoru no to ni.
Line 1 means "beneath the sky of travel."
Line 2 means "of an unfamiliar earthen hut."
Line 3 means "the bed at night."
Line 4 means "to the point of desolation."
Line 5 means "the leaking shower," kana exclamatory; against the clear moonlit nights of the two preceding poems, this is a night of rain.
