Miscellaneous Poems 620
Headnote: "Composed and sent on a snowy morning to the Bishop, Intendant of Tsurugaoka"
On a snowy morning, the poet sent this to the bishop who served as Intendant of Tsurugaoka Hachiman. Looking up at the hill, he sees snow piled even on the high tips of the pines, depicting the pure scene of the shrine on a snowy morning.
The Ruijū text places it in its winter section with a slightly different headnote. The text transmitted by Teika spells line 1 differently.
Line 1 names Tsurugaoka, the hill of the Hachiman shrine in Kamakura.
Line 2 means "when I look up."
Line 3 means "the pines on the peak," taking up the tall pines of the preceding poem as those of the Kamakura shrine.
Line 4 means "far up their tips."
Line 5 means "the snow lies piled," zo concluded by ru; the next poem, 621, also sings of pines on Mount Yawata in snow.
