Headnote: "Frost at the shrine"
Late at night, frost has settled white on the cedar leaves of the Inari shrine. White frost on the green of the sacred cedars conveys the solemn stillness of the shrine on a winter night. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a sign of praise.
The Ruijū text places it in its winter section. The text transmitted by Teika differs by one letter in line 2, and the Ruijū text in line 3.
Line 1 means "the night deepening," sa a prefix.
Line 2 means "of the Inari shrine," in Yamashiro, whose cedars are famed as sacred trees.
Line 3 means "on the cedar leaves."
Line 4 means "white, the frost," mo exclamatory.
Line 5 means "has settled," ni perfective, keri and kana exclamatory.
