Headnote: "Plovers before the moon"
The poet imagines plovers crying on a moonlit night at the pine grove of Waka on Tamatsushima, a place he has never seen even in dreams. Sanetomo, who stayed in Kamakura and never visited the famous places of the capital or Kii, voices his longing for poetic places.
Kamo no Mabuchi called lines 3 and 4 later idioms.
Line 1 names Tamatsushima in Kii, taking up the place name at the end of the preceding poem.
Line 2 is the same as line 2 of the preceding poem.
Line 3 means "even in dreams," dani implying the greater case.
Line 4 means "under a moon not yet seen," expressing longing for a place unseen in life and even in dreams.
Line 5 means "the plovers seem to cry," nari expressing inference from sound.
