Headnote: "When I met Hōgen Jōnin and he told me of the waterfall on Mount Nachi"
When Hōgen Jōnin described the waterfall of Nachi, the poet likened its long, unbroken fall to the sacred rope stretched across the mountain, conveying the sanctity of the waterfall in the holy precinct. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a sign of praise.
The Ruijū text places it in its section on the gods with the headnote "On being told of the Nachi waterfall."
Line 1 means "of Kumano," following mikumano in the two preceding poems.
Line 2 means "on the mountain of Nachi."
Line 3 means "of the sacred rope stretched," and the first three lines form a preface to uchihae in line 4.
Line 4 means "stretched out long and only," overlaying the stretched rope and the long fall.
Line 5 means "the falling waterfall," kana exclamatory.
