English Translation
O land of Izu!
South of the mountain
the hot spring pours out,
and its swiftness is the sign
of the god's own power.
Meaning
O land of Izu! The swiftness of the hot spring that pours out south of the mountain is the very sign of the god's power.
Commentary
Miscellaneous Poems 640

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On a pilgrimage to Mount Sōtō"
The swiftness of the hot spring gushing south of the mountain in Izu is the very sign of the god's power. Closing the three poems on the pilgrimage to Mount Sōtō, it unites the force of the spring and the power of the god. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a sign of praise.
It was included in the imperial anthology Gyokuyō Wakashū. The Ruijū text differs by one letter in line 1.

Line 1 means "O land of Izu!" ya exclamatory, six syllables.
Line 2 means "to the south of the mountain."
Line 3 means "of the spring that pours out," the same line as in 638.
Line 4 means "its swiftness, the god's," taking up "swift" in the preceding poem.
Line 5 means "is the sign of power," taking up "blessing" in the preceding poem; the series moves from the origin of the names to certainty of the god's power.
