Headnote: "A poem on gaining merit"
On the theme of gaining merit, the poem puts esoteric teaching directly into verse. In esoteric Buddhism a buddha is represented in three forms: the seed syllable in Sanskrit script, the symbol form shown by implements or hand gestures, and the figure of the buddha himself. Dainichi Nyorai emerges from the seed syllable into the symbol form and then into his figure.
The text transmitted by Teika lacks no in line 1.
Line 1 means "of Dainichi," the central buddha of esoteric Buddhism.
Line 2 means "coming forth from the seed syllable," the Sanskrit letter that stands for a buddha.
Line 3 names the samaya form, representing a buddha symbolically through implements or mudras.
Line 4 repeats "symbol form" and continues "in turn" to the next stage.
Line 5 means "becomes the holy figure." Here the book moves from poems on the gods to Buddhist poems.
