Miscellaneous Poems 653
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the heart of celebration"
On the shore of Nagara where cranes play, the sea wind blows and the waves seem to keep coming in through ten thousand ages. The ceaseless waves and the long-lived cranes carry a blessing for an everlasting reign. Kamo no Mabuchi marked it with a sign of praise.
The Ruijū text places it in its section of celebration.
Line 1 means "where the cranes dwell," nearly sharing its first two lines with the next poem, 654.
Line 2 means "of the shore of Nagara" in Settsu, naga echoing "long-lasting."
Line 3 means "in the sea breeze," repeating "shore" from line 2.
Line 4 means "for ten thousand ages."
Line 5 means "the waves seem to roll in," naru inferring from sound and concluding zo.
