Headnote: "A screen poem"
On the pines of Kiku beach in Buzen painted on a screen, the poet says they have become old trees, yet no one knows how many years they have passed, musing on their long age.
The text transmitted by Teika differs in line 2. "The beach pines of Kiku in Toyokuni" is a phrase from the Man'yōshū.

Line 1 means "of Toyokuni," the old province of Buzen and Bungo.
Line 2 means "the beach pines of Kiku," in Buzen.
Line 3 means "have grown old," with a break after the line, taking up the lasting pine of the preceding poem.
Line 4 means "I know not, how many ages," shirazu set in parenthetically.
Line 5 means "have they passed the years?" ka concluded by kemu; it is nearly the same wording as in 656 of this book.
