Headnote: "A scene of travellers on foot crossing a bridge"
On a painting of travellers on foot crossing a bridge, the poet wonders whether the patched bridge of Mama in Katsushika, which sways beneath a walker, has rotted away, musing on the age of an old poetic bridge.
The Ruijū text gives the headnote ending "crossing." The end of line 5 is hard to read in the source as displayed and is here read kuchi ya shinuramu.

Line 1 means "of the walker."
Line 2 means "it sways when crossed."
Line 3 means "of Katsushika" in Shimōsa.
Line 4 names the patched bridge of Mama in Katsushika, a poetic place sung in the Man'yōshū.
Line 5 means "has it rotted?" ya concluded by ramu; after crossing a river in the preceding poem, it places a poem of crossing a bridge.
