Shirakumo ni magau sakura o tazunu tote kakaranu yama no nakaritsuru kana

English Translation
Seeking cherry blooms
indistinct from the white clouds,
as I searched for them,
there was not a single hill
that I did not climb upon
Meaning
In searching for cherry blossoms that look just like white clouds, there was not a single mountain I did not set foot on.
Commentary
Book One Spring Poems 42

The poet says that in searching for cherries that look like white clouds he has made his way into every mountain. The wit is that, just as white clouds hang on every mountain, he too has come upon them all.

First line, 'shirakumo ni', is the same opening as poem 40, likening cherries to white clouds.
Second line, 'magau sakura o', is the same phrase as in poem 40, the two placed close together.
Third line, 'tazunu tote', means in order to seek them out.
Fourth line, 'kakaranu yama no', contains kakaranu, a pivot word meaning both clouds not hanging over and the poet not setting foot on a mountain.
Final line, 'nakaritsuru kana', means there was none, sighing over the toil of searching every mountain.
