Scattered petals heaped
on the garden I'd have seen,
cherry blossoms there,
had I not come seeking them

Book One Spring Poems 49
Because the poet arrived before the wind scattered the flowers, he could see them in full bloom; otherwise he would have found only a garden strewn with petals. As if racing the wind to the blossoms, he expresses his joy at being in time through a counterfactual.
First line, 'chiritsumoru', means scattered and piled up.
Second line, 'niwa o zo mimashi', means I would have seen a garden, zo closing on the attributive of mashi. The poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, 'sakurabana', names what scatters.
Fourth line, 'kaze yori saki ni', means before the wind scattered them, framing the visit as a race with the wind.
Final line, 'tazunezariseba', is counterfactual, had I not come, inverted with the upper half; its form matches 'if the cherries were' at the end of poem 48.
