English Translation
It is I alone
who cannot hasten to cut
the summer robes,
for single-mindedly I
am one who mourns the spring
Meaning
I alone cannot bring myself to hurry and cut my summer robes, for with my whole heart I am still grieving for the spring.
Commentary
Book Two Summer Poems 94

Even at the seasonal change of clothes at the start of summer, the poet alone cannot bring himself to hurry and cut his summer robes, for he is still mourning the spring that has passed. The longing for the departed season is deftly expressed in words drawn from the summer robe.
This is the opening poem of Book Two, Summer Poems. It takes up poem 93, which closed Book One grieving the parting from spring, and begins the summer book with the same reluctance. It answers poem 155, which ends the book with a premonition of autumn, so that the feeling of a season's threshold is placed at both ends of the book.

First line, 'ware nomi zo', means I alone; the particle zo forms a binding with tatarenu in the second line, sharpening the sense that while everyone else changes clothes, the poet does not.
Second line, 'isogi tatarenu', is a pivot word in which tatsu means both to cut cloth and for summer to begin. Re is the spontaneous auxiliary ru and nu the attributive form of the negative zu, giving 'cannot bring myself to cut in haste'. The poem breaks after the second line, and what follows is an inverted statement of the reason.
Third line, 'natsugoromo', is the light robe worn in summer, recalling the change of clothes on the first day of the Fourth Month. Poem 144 in this book also opens with 'natsugoromo'.
Fourth line, 'hitoe ni haru o', is a pivot word in which hitoe means both single-mindedly and the unlined summer robe. Tatsu and hitoe are both associated words of clothing.
Final line, 'oshimu mi nareba', means since I am one who grieves, giving the reason for the second line.
