hedgerow in all the land
where deutzia fails to bloom,
famed and flowing far in name
is the village of Tamagawa
Meaning
There is no hedge where the deutzia does not bloom, yet the place whose name flows far and wide for it is the village of Tamagawa.
Commentary
Book Two Summer Poems 101

The deutzia blooms on every hedge, yet the place whose fame for it stands above all is the village of Tamagawa. Contrasting a flower found everywhere with a celebrated site, the poem praises the poetic place of Tamagawa.
Tamagawa's fame for deutzia is reflected in a poem by Sagami in the Goshūiwakashū, which describes the flowers stretching out like a weir of waves; this poem draws on that renown.
From poem 98 through poem 103 in this book, poems on the deutzia follow one another, likening the flower to snow, to moonlight, to hedges and to sacred ropes.
The author, Tadamichi, is Fujiwara no Tadamichi. A son of Fujiwara no Tadazane, he rose to Regent and Chancellor and was called the Hosshōji Regent. He also excelled in Chinese verse and calligraphy.

First line, 'unohana no', takes up the deutzia, the white flower of early summer.
Second line, 'sakanu kakine wa', means a hedge where deutzia does not bloom; like 'all along the hedgerows' in poem 99, it draws on the image of deutzia on hedges.
Third line, 'nakeredomo', means although there is none, conceding that the flower blooms everywhere before turning in the lower half.
Fourth line, 'na ni nagaretaru', means whose name has flowed widely through the world. Nagare is an associated word with the river in Tamagawa.
Final line, 'tamagawa no sato', is a poetic place in Settsu famed for deutzia. The poem closes on this noun, naming the celebrated spot.
