Book Three Autumn Poems 157
The poet calls on the first wind of autumn not to scatter the white dew lying on a broad plain overgrown with kudzu. The beauty of the dew that begins to form as autumn arrives, and the wish to keep it, are expressed as a plea to the wind.
Taking up the coolness of the wind on the first day of autumn in the preceding poem, 156, this poem addresses that first wind, and the two form the opening pair of autumn.
The author, Nakamasa, is Minamoto no Nakamasa. A son of Minamoto no Yoritsuna, he rose to Head of the Arsenal Bureau. He was the father of Minamoto no Yorimasa and was active as a poet from the reign of Emperor Horikawa.
First line, 'makuzu hau', means where the kudzu creeps, ma being a prefix of praise, setting an autumn field.
Second line, 'ada no ōno no', is a pivot word in which ada is both the place Ada in Yamato and ada, fleeting, hinting at the fragility of the soon-vanishing dew.
Third line, 'shiratsuyu o', is the dew on the grasses of the field, a motif of early autumn.
Fourth line, 'fuki na midari so', is a prohibition in the form na ... so: do not blow it into disarray. The poem breaks after the fourth line and the final line is inverted. 'The autumn wind that scatters the dew' in poem 237 depicts a wind that does just what this poem pleads against.
Final line, 'aki no hatsukaze', is the first wind of autumn, naming the one addressed with a closing noun.
