Tanabata no koke no koromo o itowazu wa hito naminami ni kashi mo shitemashi

English Translation
If the Weaver Maid
would not scorn this mossy robe
that a monk must wear,
like all the other people
I would lend it to her too
Meaning
If the Weaver Maid would not shrink from my humble mossy robe, I would lend it to her just like everyone else.
Commentary
Book Three Autumn Poems 159

At Tanabata it was the custom to lend robes to the Weaver Maid, but the poet, a monk, wears only the humble 'mossy robe'; if she did not mind it, he would lend it like everyone else. Humbling himself as one who has left the world, he expresses with gentle humor the wish to join in the festival custom.
Drawing on the custom of offering robes to the Weaver Maid at Tanabata, poems 160 and 163 in this book also sing of lending robes.
From poem 158 through poem 167 in this book come poems on Tanabata, singing of the yearly meeting of the Herdsman and the Weaver Maid, the custom of lending robes to the Weaver, and the tears of parting at dawn.
The author, Nōin, was a monk of the mid-Heian period whose lay name was Tachibana no Nagayasu. He traveled through the provinces and left many poems. He is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals of the middle ages, and one of his poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

First line, 'tanabata no', here refers to the Weaver Maid.
Second line, 'koke no koromo o', uses koke no koromo, the rough robe of monks and recluses, for the poet's own robe as one who has taken vows.
Third line, 'itowazu wa', means if she does not dislike it, zu wa expressing a negative supposition answered by mashi in the final line.
Fourth line, 'hito naminami ni', means like other people, joining in the custom of lending robes as others do.
Final line, 'kashi mo shitemashi', uses mashi, the auxiliary of contrary-to-fact supposition: I would lend it, implying hesitation to actually do so.
