where the kudzu vines climb

Commentary
Book Three Autumn Poems 170

Even to a humble hut of pine planks in a mountain village, overgrown with creeping kudzu and visited by no one, autumn has come of its own accord. The poem depicts the stillness and loneliness of autumn in the mountains, where the season surely arrives even if no person does.
Poem 172 in this book also sings of autumn coming to a house deep in the mountains, using the same words 'autumn has come'.
From poem 168 through poem 173 in this book come poems that recognize the arrival of autumn in the maiden flower, the wind over the rice leaves and the scenes of mountain villages.
The author, Tsunenobu, is Minamoto no Tsunenobu. A son of Minamoto no Michikata, he rose to Major Counselor and was called the Katsura Counselor. In his last years he died at his post as Provisional Governor-General of Dazaifu. He was the father of the compiler, Minamoto no Toshiyori.

First line, 'onozukara', means naturally, of itself, showing that autumn arrives without anyone announcing it.
Second line, 'aki wa kinikeri', means autumn has come, the perfective nu and exclamatory keri conveying sudden realization. The poem breaks after the second line and the lower half is inverted. It is the same phrase as the final line of poem 172 in this book.
Third line, 'yamazato no', is a village tucked among the mountains.
Fourth line, 'kuzu hai kakaru', means where kudzu vines creep over it, suggesting a dwelling overrun by the plants of the autumn fields.
Final line, 'maki no fuseya ni', uses fuseya, a low humble hut, and maki, the timber it is built of.
