Book Three Autumn Poems 196
Because the moon rises from the peak of Mirror Mountain, it shows a clear light that is never clouded, just as a mirror stays bright. It is a witty poem linking the 'mirror' in the mountain's name to the moon's unclouded brilliance.
Poem 204 in this book also sings of a moon 'rising from the peak', sharing the device of singing of the moon through a mountain's name. In poem 205 in this book, the moon itself is likened to a flawless mirror.
From poem 174 through poem 217 in this book a long sequence of moon poems follows, from the evening moon through the bright moon of the fifteenth night of the Eighth Month to the moon at dawn, singing of the moon in all its aspects and of the heart that gazes on it.
The author was Kii, a lady-in-waiting to Princess Yūshi, a daughter of Emperor Go-Suzaku. She was one of the poets of the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequences, and one of her poems appears in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, 'kagamiyama', is a poetic place in Ōmi whose kagami, mirror, is an associated word with 'clouded' in the fourth line.
Second line, 'mine yori izuru', means rising from the peak, the same line as the second line of poem 204 in this book.
Third line, 'tsuki nareba', means since it is the moon, a definite condition.
Fourth line, 'kumoru yo mo naki', means with no clouded nights, echoing a mirror that never dims.
Final line, 'kage o koso mire', is a binding in which koso closes on the realis mire, stressing the clear light that is seen.
