Book Three Autumn Poems 204
Seeing the moonlight from the peak of Mount Kasuga reflected on the shallows of the Saho River, the poet takes it for a sheet of ice. Likening the white, cold gleam of the moon to river ice, the poem depicts the crisp beauty of an autumn night.
The poems on the moon of Kasuga that began with poem 200 in this book end with this poem. The conceit of seeing moonlight as ice also appears in poem 193 in this book.
From poem 174 through poem 217 in this book a long sequence of moon poems follows, from the evening moon through the bright moon of the fifteenth night of the Eighth Month to the moon at dawn, singing of the moon in all its aspects and of the heart that gazes on it.
The author, Tsunenobu, is Minamoto no Tsunenobu. A son of Minamoto no Michikata, he rose to Major Counselor and was called the Katsura Counselor. In his last years he died at his post as Provisional Governor-General of Dazaifu. He was the father of the compiler, Minamoto no Toshiyori.
First line, 'kasugayama', is the mountain behind the Kasuga Shrine in Nara, including the area of Mount Mikasa.
Second line, 'mine yori izuru', means rising from the peak, the same line as the second line of poem 196 in this book.
Third line, 'tsukikage wa', means the moonlight, presenting the topic.
Fourth line, 'saho no kawase no', is the shallows of the Saho River in Nara, which flows at the foot of Mount Kasuga.
Final line, 'kōri narikeri', means it is ice, likening the moonlight to ice and closing with the exclamatory keri. Poem 193 in this book also sees moonlight as ice.
