Book Three Autumn Poems 217
The storm has scattered the autumn leaves as an offering to the moon, so the god who guards the leaves must surely be cursing it. There is wit in seeing the leaves fall and the moon come into clear view as the storm making an offering to the moon, and bringing in the god of the leaves shows the freshness typical of the compiler.
The long moon sequence closes with this poem pairing the moon and the autumn leaves. The sequence on autumn leaves begins with poem 243 in this book.
From poem 174 through poem 217 in this book a long sequence of moon poems follows, from the evening moon through the bright moon of the fifteenth night of the Eighth Month to the moon at dawn, singing of the moon in all its aspects and of the heart that gazes on it.
The author, Toshiyori, is Minamoto no Toshiyori. A son of Minamoto no Tsunenobu, he compiled this anthology, the Kin'yōwakashū, at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa, and is known for his innovative style.
First line, 'arashi o ya', means the storm, and the particle ya binds with ramu in the third line.
Second line, 'hamori no kami mo', is the god of leaf-guarding, believed to dwell in trees such as the oak and protect their leaves.
Third line, 'tataruramu', means is it bringing a curse, reproaching the storm that stripped the leaves. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'tsuki ni momiji no', means the autumn leaves to the moon, the falling leaves made an offering.
Final line, 'tamuke shitekeri', uses tamuke, an offering to the gods: the storm has made an offering of leaves to the moon.
