Book Three Autumn Poems 233
Addressing the maiden flower, bent and broken by the wind in the night, the poet tells it not to feel awkward toward or be shunned by the white dew this morning. Seeing the flower as a woman, the poem overlays her yielding to the wind with the unease of a lover facing another.
In the preceding poem, 232, the white dew is uneasy about the maiden flower, while here the flower is told not to be made uneasy by the dew, and the two form a pair. The flower broken by the wind also appears in poem 231 in this book.
From poem 230 through poem 233 in this book come poems on the maiden flower, which, likened to a woman, is sung in its dealings with the white dew and the wind.
The author, Tadamichi, is Fujiwara no Tadamichi. A son of Fujiwara no Tadazane, he rose to Regent and Chancellor and was called the Hosshōji Regent. He also excelled in Chinese verse and calligraphy.
First line, 'ominaeshi', is the one addressed, seen as a woman.
Second line, 'yo no ma no kaze ni', means by the wind in the night, with a hint of the wind as a man visiting her.
Third line, 'orefushite', means broken and lying flat, echoing 'has it broken' in poem 231 in this book.
Fourth line, 'kesa shiratsuyu ni', means by the white dew of this morning, which, as in the preceding poem, 232, is seen as the flower's lover.
Final line, 'kokoro okaru na', is a pivot word in which oka is both for dew to settle and kokoro oku, to feel uneasy; ru is the passive auxiliary and na the prohibitive: do not be made uneasy.
