the fujibakama in bloom

Book Three Autumn Poems 236
Seeing fujibakama blooming far and wide as trousers whose seams have burst, the poet wonders whether the spider that stitched them knotted its thread too carelessly. Overlaying hokorobu, for flowers to open, with the bursting of seams and bringing in the spider's thread, it is a poem of wit.
'The spider's thread' also appears in poem 219 in this book. With this poem the sequence on the fujibakama ends.
From poem 234 through poem 236 in this book come poems on the fujibakama, the 'wisteria trousers' flower, sung with words of clothing such as hanging, wearing and coming unstitched, in keeping with its name.
The author, Akinaka (Minamoto), is Minamoto no Akinaka. A son of Minamoto no Akifusa, he served as Head of the Department of Divinities. He was the father of Taikenmon'in no Horikawa and Jōsaimon'in no Hyōe.
First line, 'sasagani no', uses sasagani, the spider, leading to 'thread' in the second line. It is the same opening as poem 219 in this book.
Second line, 'ito no tojime ya', uses tojime, the knot that ends a seam, and the particle ya binds with ramu in the third line.
Third line, 'ada naramu', means was it careless. The poem breaks after the third line.
Fourth line, 'hokorobiwataru', uses hokorobu in both senses, for a seam to come apart and for flowers to open, describing blossoms spreading everywhere.
Final line, 'fujibakama kana', means ah, the fujibakama, with the exclamatory kana. Thread, knot and coming apart are associated words of the trousers.
