Book Three Autumn Poems 242
Since these are chrysanthemums that the poet's lord will pick for a thousand years to come, even the dew settling on them must not be laid down idly. Drawing on the belief that chrysanthemum dew brings long life, the poem carries a wish for his lord's longevity.
The legend that drinking the dew of chrysanthemums grants long life was sung in connection with the Chrysanthemum Festival on the ninth day of the Ninth Month. With the preceding poem, 241, it forms the pair on chrysanthemums.
Poems 241 and 242 in this book are poems on the chrysanthemum.
The author, Akisue, is Fujiwara no Akisue. A son of Fujiwara no Takatsune, he was trusted as a close retainer of Emperor Shirakawa because his mother had been the emperor's wet nurse, and he rose to Master of the Office of Palace Repairs. He founded the Rokujō Fujiwara house of poetry.
First line, 'chitose made', means even for a thousand years, expressing wishes for long life.
Second line, 'kimi ga tsumubeki', means that my lord is to pick.
Third line, 'kiku nareba', means since they are chrysanthemums, a definite condition drawing on the flower's association with long life.
Fourth line, 'tsuyu mo ada ni wa', means the dew too, not in vain, reflecting the belief that chrysanthemum dew brings long life. Like ada in poem 157 in this book, the word suggests the fragility of dew.
Final line, 'okaji to zo omou', means I think it should not settle, a binding in which zo closes on the attributive omou.
