Book Three Autumn Poems 252
No sooner does the storm blow over the peaks of Mount Ogura than the bridge spanning the valley is colored by the falling leaves, as though it had turned crimson itself. The poem sees the bridge buried in leaves as a bridge that has changed color.
It shares its final line with the preceding poem, 251; where that poem has a duck's feathers turn crimson, this one has the valley bridge do so, and the two stand together on the conceit of things other than trees turning red.
From poem 243 through poem 253 in this book come poems on autumn leaves, from trees just beginning to turn to leaves scattering until they fill rivers and waterfalls.
The author, Akisue, is Fujiwara no Akisue. A son of Fujiwara no Takatsune, he was trusted as a close retainer of Emperor Shirakawa because his mother had been the emperor's wet nurse, and he rose to Master of the Office of Palace Repairs. He founded the Rokujō Fujiwara house of poetry.
First line, 'ogurayama', is the mountain at Saga in Kyoto, famous for its autumn leaves.
Second line, 'mine no arashi no', means the storm on the peaks.
Third line, 'fuku kara ni', means as soon as it blows, kara ni marking what happens immediately after.
Fourth line, 'tani no kakehashi', is a bridge spanning the valley.
Final line, 'momiji shinikeri', means it has turned red, the same final line as poem 244 in this book and the preceding poem, 251.
