Kaminazuki shigururu mama ni kurabuyama shitateru bakari momiji shinikeri

English Translation
In the Godless Month,
as the winter showers fall,
Kurabu Mountain
has turned so red its leaves light
even the shade beneath its trees
Meaning
In the Tenth Month, as the winter showers fall again and again, Mount Kurabu has turned so brilliantly red that it glows even in the shade beneath its trees.
Commentary
Book Four Winter Poems 257

With each winter shower the colors deepen, until Mount Kurabu, whose name carries the sound of darkness, blazes with leaves so bright that even the ground beneath the trees seems lit. The wit lies in setting the darkness in the mountain's name against the radiance of the leaves.
This is the opening poem of Book Four, Winter Poems. It begins the winter book with the showers and colored leaves of the Tenth Month, the first month of winter, and, taking up poem 256, which closed Book Three, Autumn Poems, with leaves fallen at autumn's end, depicts mountain leaves that still glow as winter begins. It answers the book's last poem, 304, which marks the close of the year, so that the beginning and end of winter echo each other.
From poem 257 through poem 266 in this book come poems on the sights of early winter, such as showers and colored leaves.

First line, 'kaminazuki', is another name for the Tenth Month of the lunar calendar, the first month of winter. Poem 260 in this book opens with the same line and also sings of showers and leaves.
Second line, 'shigururu mama ni', means as the winter showers fall, following the old belief that showers dye the leaves.
Third line, 'kurabuyama', is a poetic place in Yamashiro, thought to be an old name for Mount Kurama; the sound kurabu suggests darkness.
Fourth line, 'shitateru bakari', means so that it shines even beneath the trees, set against the darkness in the mountain's name.
Final line, 'momiji shinikeri', means it has turned red, closing with the exclamatory keri.
