Book Four Winter Poems 263
Seeing leaves fall upon a traveler's sedge hat and weave a brocade there, the poet surmises that the leaves must be falling on Mount Mimuro. The wit lies in pairing the humble sedge hat with rich brocade, and the scene of travel is vividly drawn.
After the raftsman's pole in the preceding poem, 262, this poem likens the leaves on a traveler's hat to brocade, and poems on people adorned with leaves stand side by side.
From poem 257 through poem 266 in this book come poems on the sights of early winter, such as showers and colored leaves.
The author, Tsunenobu, is Minamoto no Tsunenobu. A son of Minamoto no Michikata, he rose to Major Counselor and was called the Katsura Counselor. In his last years he died at his post as Provisional Governor-General of Dazaifu. He was the father of the compiler, Minamoto no Toshiyori.
First line, 'mimuroyama', is a poetic place in Yamato famed for autumn leaves. 'The mountain of Mimuro' is also sung in poem 266 in this book.
Second line, 'momiji chiru rashi', means the leaves must be falling, using rashi, an inference grounded in evidence. The poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, 'tabibito no', means the traveler's, showing a figure passing near the mountain.
Fourth line, 'suge no ogasa ni', means on the little hat of woven sedge, the scene on which the inference rests.
Final line, 'nishiki orikaku', means they weave brocade, likening the leaves fallen on the hat to brocade, as in 'on his pole, brocade' in the preceding poem, 262.
